Tata Safari out with new 2.2 litre dicor

Tata Safari dicor 2.2 litre action

Tata Safari’s 2.2l engine and the Scorpio’s upcoming 2.2 are probably the most anticipated and talked about engines in the country over the past year. Finally Tata beat Mahindra to it and launched the 2.2 litre dicor.

This new smaller 2.2L 16-valve DOHC engine produces 138 bhp (140 PS) at 4000 rpm and peak torque is at 320 Nm from 1700 through 2700 rpm. According to Tata this engine, more refined and made of modern alloys, is lighter and brings the new Safari’s 0-100 km/h time down to 15 seconds.

Variable Geometry Turbos are becoming more common with many companies going for these and Tata also rightfully opted for this (they labeled it VTT - Variable Turbine Technology). A VGT essentially reduces the turbo lag, adding some pep to otherwise sluggish diesel engine and grants a better power & torque spread across the rev range. Anybody who has driven a Verna diesel would understand this better.

On the exterior Safari 2.2 is pretty much the same except for a few changes, one of them being a new grille which a bit refreshing. Apart from this it also gets a different bumper grille and a redesigned spare wheel cover. With two new colours added (Cycus Grey & Mountain Green), 2.2 gets a total of nine colours to choose from.

Airbags, ABS, leather seats and DVD MP3 system with LCD screens in the front seat headrests are exclusive on the VX variant. Here’s a detailed feature comparison.

4×4 version has an Limited Slip Differential (LSD) for serious off-roading purposes and can be opted only on EX and VX versions.

hi prabhu! thanks for adding in the info. True… nothing has been done to improve those. But 2.2 has been received well and it seems sales are already up and I doubt if Tata will do anything to rectify them.

I really amused about the torque, refinement of this 2.2 ltr safari dicor. I felt this 2.2 ltr is quitter than scorpio and vibrations r well under control. Though quality of plastics r not upto the mark, but beige interiors r very shiny n healthy. steering is very light due to lighter engine and very pleasent to drive. Some time tested tata flaws r there which has to be rectified, no need to mention it, I think tata know them very well.
