Maruti Suzuki SX4 Sedan Arrives!

Maruti Suzuki SX4 Front

SX4 stands for “S” – Sport, “X” – Crossover, “4″ – All Seasons.
As part of the Suzuki‘s new revival strategy SX4 is its second global car (the first being the Suzuki Swift). Maruti Udyog Ltd has recently launched the SX4 sedan in the premium A3 segment aimed mainly at Honda City which is the current segment leader. The car is originally a hatch converted to sedan designed at the world famous Guigiaro’s ITALDESIGN studio.

The first thing that is immediately apparent when you see the car up-close is its unmistakable size, “its friggin huge!”. The design, said to have been inspired by the Japanese Kabuki mask, is truly bold and aggressive. The shape of the hood and the way the headlights wrap around along the hood are the styling elements that give SX4 a mean & aggressive “don’t mess with me” face. The kinked front triangular quarter-glass, besides improving the driver’s vision, allows for a rising beltline which wraps around nicely on to the tail lamps & the boot. The rear overhang is quite big and looks a little odd but when viewed directly from behind resembles Audi’s of the early decade. The flared wheel-arches give the car a more muscular look and house 195/65R15 tires on the VXi and bigger 205/60 rubbers on 16′ alloys for the ZXi variant. The SX4 stands high with a ground clearance of 190mm (ZXi) meaning you can shoot the car over any speedbump or a pothole without worrying about scraping its belly.

Maruti Suzuki SX4 Rear

As for the seating position we sit quite high in the car like in an SUV, and this coupled with the front quarter-glass which gets rid of the blind spot to some extent, gives the driver an excellent view of the road. Theater style rear seat, a little raised over the front, is comfortable only for two passengers. The bulged out center armrest is very irritating and gives the third passenger an awkward seating position. SX4′s tall stance allows for a lot of headroom and makes it very easy to get in & out unlike in the Balenos & the Esteems where we had to crawl in & out.

Though we find many parts from the Swift, the dash is very contemporary especially with the integrated CD-player offered on the ZXi variant. Things like the two chrome strips running on either side of the center console, chrome ringed dials for the climate control and the steering mounted stereo controls (ZXi) give the dash a very up-market feel.

Maruti Suzuki SX4 Interior

SX4 is offered with only one petrol motor, an all new ‘M-series’ engine. This 1.6 liter 16-valve DOHC engine makes 102 bhp @ 5500 rpm and 145 Nm torque @ 4200 rpm. Unlike the older G-series Baleno engine this one has a stronger mid-range which improves the city drivability but is not as free revving. This new engine boasts of features like drive-by-wire throttle control and chain driven cams. MUL says this engine is designed to be compliant with even the EUR-IV and Euro-V norms in the future.

The SX4 ZXi is very high on safety and feature rich for its price. I just wish the engine was a little more exciting and zippier, perhaps MUL could’ve offered the 1.6 VVT engine variant for those who are more performance oriented.

I guess FE depends a lot on how & where u drive. I’ve heard claims ranging from 7kmpl to 14kmpl in daily driving. AUTOCAR tested 9.3 in the city and 14.5 on the highway.
