The new Chevrolet Spark has been finally launched in India. Chevy Spark as we all know is the new Daewoo Matiz in its new avatar. It enters the small car segment to take on the Marutis, Tatas & the Hyundais who rule this turf.
With the new stylish design this Chevy is very contemporary but hard to be mistaken for anything but the Matiz. The design elements that are clearly apparent straight away are the bigger new pointy headlights, the V-shaped bonnet, the small slit between the bonnet & the bumper and not to forget the big Chevy emblem on the hood. Details like the kink in the beltline near the side view mirrors adds to the car’s contempo figure. The big round taillights are the very prominent on the rear.
Step insde the car and the first thing you’ll notice is the instrument cluster mounted on the centre console. This new dash design makes the panel visible to all the passengers in the car. Practically speaking this might’ve been a nice attempt at improving the driver’s viewing angle, but I found it a bit hard to read the speedo and that made me very uncomfortable. The controls are well laid out and there’s a good amount of legroom & headroom. The new steering wheel, the silver colored centre console, lots of cubbyholes and a couple of shelves under the dash are some of the good things but the cabin plastics are lifeless and cheap to look at.
The only engine variant offered right now is a 995cc 8 valve SOHC motor which puts out 63 bhp power @ 5400 rpm and 90 Nm torque @ 4200 rpm.
