Details of the new Skoda Fabia in India

Skoda Fabia India top

News about Skoda Fabia making it to India has been going on for about 6 years now and finally the second generation 2007 Fabia has come to us now in 2008.

While bookings have been open for quite some time, cars are now being delivered to the buyers. My neighbor was one of them and I got a chance to look around.

Fabia Impression

Design wise, Skoda Fabia is definitely a looker. Its quite long for a hatchback (almost 1-foot longer than Maruti Swift) and very well proportioned. Looking around, my admiration of this Skoda’s looks grew with each of its design details – its wonderful headlights and grille, the prominent bonnet ‘V’ thats carried onto its bumper, all its wonderful curves and character lines.

Indian Skoda Fabia Interior

Getting in and sitting in the drivers seat, if anything had doubled my appreciation for the Fabia. With all the storage spaces and high quality plastics, the interiors were top class. The steering wheel, gear stick, door levers were all very contemporary. There I was sitting inside, getting all hopeful and dreamy, unable to find anything to complain about.

And then, without closing my door, I started the car. The engine came to life, I got out and *pop* went my bubble. I was like “what the F*@*!” the sound from the engine was pure cacophony. It was grating on the ears and what bothers me even more is the fact that its a friggin’ 3-cylinder PD diesel.

And then he told me it’d cost 8.3 lakhs on the road for the Ambiente variant. All the enthusiastic wait for Fabia to make it to India and whatever praise I’ve had left for it went up in smokes. Now, I doubt if I’d even wanna consider Fabia an option, if I were looking to buy a hatchback in the Indian market.

Skoda Fabia Variants

Fabia for India is being offered in 4 variants. Starting from the base variant Skoda calls them Active, Classic, Ambiente and Elegance. Airbags, air-con and height/reach adjustable steering are standard on all the variants. Leaving the minor details out, following are some of the important feature differences between the all the versions.

  • Skoda Fabia Active: This base variant is stripped out of power windows and cd/mp3 audio system.
  • Skoda Fabia Classic: Second in line, this variant quite obviously has power windows and audio system.
  • Skoda Fabia Ambiente: feature differences on this version over the Classic include front fog lamps and alloy wheels on the outside. Inside its got height adjustable driver & front passenger seats and dual-tone onyx/grey interiors. On the safety side, this Fabia gets ABS and remote key-less entry.
  • Skoda Fabia Elegance: This range topping version has sunroof, projector headlamps and rear parking sensors with inside display.

Skoda Fabia Engines

As of now, there are 2 engine options – a 1.4 petrol and 1.4 diesel.

  • The 1.4-litre diesel engine is no modern day marvel and is a disappointment in terms of refinement. Its got no VGT nor is it a common-rail and it has only 3-cylinders! with 2-valves! per cylinder. But, according to many testers this noisy engine is quite famous for its frugality and averages a 17 km/l. Its maximum power and torque are rated at 69 bhp at 4000 rpm and 155 Nm at 1600 – 2800 rpm. Fabia with this engine does the 0-100 km/h run in 15 seconds and can reach a top speed of 163 km/h.
  • The 1.4-liter 16v petrol on the other hand, supposedly returns a fuel efficiency average of 12 kmpl. Max power output is 86 bhp at 5000 rpm (torque is 132 Nm at 3800 rpm) about the same as the Suzuki Swift but with all its safety features & luxuries is heavier than the Swift. Fabia with this engine takes 12+ seconds for its 0-100 km/h dash and can reach a top speed of 173 kmph.

Right now the 1.4 petrol is offered only on Elegance variant. The word is Skoda will introduce another 1.2-lire petrol in addition to the above engines.

On road Mumbai price for Fabia petrol offered in Elegance trim is 7.9 lakhs. Here are the Indian on road prices of Skoda Fabia diesel in lakhs INR.

Auto Expo 2008: TATA Indigo CS, Indica DICOR and X1

Even before all the commotion about the launch of the Tata nano, Tata has launched 3 new models – 2 new variants of their long running successful models Indigo and Indica and an all new Tata Sumo. They also showcased a new generation Indica and Xenon XT pickup truck which are to go on sale in the later part of 2008.

Tata added another variant to their Indigo line-up, a shortened version called the Indigo CS. This sedan with a shortened boot manages to offer 400 litres of boot space and is offered with two engines – a 65 bhp 1.2-litre petrol from the Indica Xeta and a 70 bhp 1.4-litre turbo diesel from the Indigo V series. All of these make this car fit into the small car category and make it eligible for excise duty exemptions.

TATA Indica V2 DICOR

Another engine option has been added to the Indica line-up. Its the common rail 1.4-litre 70 bhp diesel unit thats offered in Indigo DICOR. This engine is much smoother with better torque and a more linear power delivery. Its priced at 4.25 lakhs (delhi ex-showroom).

another rant on Tata Nano – the one lakh car

Tata Nano India

Never have I seen a simple small car get soo much attention from the press and that’s not just the Indian media but the entire global press has been curiously awaiting the unveiling of Tata’s 1 lakh car now called TATA nano. Surf through any news channel on TV its nano, pick up a newspaper and its Tata nano on the frontpage, visit any news website and its nano, automotive communities online and the blogs have gone berserk – its utter frenzy everywhere. This hysteric event went live not just on Indian tele but all over the world.

Watching and listening to Mr Ratan Tata gave me goose flesh… Made me feel proud it was Tata that made the impossible possible as it was sworn by many automakers around the world. We just witnessed a monumental landmark in the history of the Indian Automotive Industry, the birth of a completely new segment of cars.

Tata Nano rear

Some specs and details of TATA nano if you haven’t heard or read already. With the engine mounted at the rear, nano is rear-wheel driven and engine is a two-cylinder, 623 cc petrol that makes 33 bhp power and 48 Nm torque. The expected fuel efficiency is 20+ kmpl. The 1-lakh tag is the ex-showroom price and on the road it’d cost around Rs 125000 in Delhi.

On the inside, it has a simple dashboard with center mounted instrument cluster. Driver and passenger seats have integrated headrests and rear seats can be folded for additional boot space.

Comparing it to the Maruti 800, nano is 9 inches shorter in length but 2 inches wider and 7.5 inches taller. With these dimensions it manges to be 21 % more spacious than the Maruti.

  Maruti 800 Tata Nano
Length 3335 mm 3100 mm (-9.2 in)
Width 1440 mm 1500 mm (+2.3 in)
height 1405 mm 1600 mm (+7.6 in)
Power 37 bhp 33 bhp
Torque 59 Nm 48 Nm
Fuel economy 20 kmpl 20+ kmpl

Nano will be up for sale by the end of 2008 in September – October and will be offered in 3 variants namely standard, deluxe and luxury. The standard version has no AC or body coloured bumpers.

Like all big things the nano had some bricks thrown at it too. The environmentalists have voiced their opinions about how this would add to the road congestion and step-up the pollution. They do have a point about the congestion in urban areas but IMO that is not something a buyer or an automaker should be concerned with as much as the government should be with the infrastructure. And about the pollution, Mr.Tata says Nano meets Bharat 3 and Euro 4 emission norms and pollutes lesser than some of the 2-wheelers in the market today. He also adds that 85% of the Indian population is in the rural parts and not just the metros.

The competition and critics have expressed some safety concerns and without the price in the equation, I doubt if any car enthusiast (myself included) would appreciate the car by itself. Nano fits right in the middle of the wide gap that exists between the conservative two-wheeler market and the entry level Maruti 800 and mind you, this is aimed at the two-wheeler market and the closest it can be compared to another car is the Maruti 800. Perhaps, a person living or who has lived in India would better understand what nano means to the intended buyer.
